The classroom I aspire to build is one where every student feels valued, welcomed, and supported. My goal is to create a warm, inclusive environment where students feel safe being themselves and are encouraged to grow emotionally, socially, and academically. At the heart of my teaching practice lies a deep belief in the power of connection. I view authentic relationships as the foundation for meaningful learning. By meeting students where they are and adapting my approach to meet their individual needs, I strive to ensure that every learner has equitable opportunities for success, rather than expecting them to conform to systems that may not serve them.
I believe that education should be engaging, accessible, and relevant to studentsâ lives. By fostering creativity, flexibility, and hands-on learning, I aim to create experiences that inspire curiosity and a love of learning. Through both my studies and classroom experience, I have learned that students cannot thrive unless their basic needs are met. For this reason, I lead with empathy, care, and understanding in all aspects of my teaching. I recognize that studentsâ physical, emotional, and social well-being are inseparable from their ability to learn; supporting the whole child is essential for meaningful academic growth.
Empowering students to grow aligns with Carol Dweckâs theory of the growth mindset, which emphasizes the belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed through effort, perseverance, and learning from mistakes. I intentionally model and nurture this mindset within my classroom by celebrating progress, encouraging reflection, and viewing challenges as opportunities for growth. I want students to recognize that their potential is not fixed but continuously evolving through hard work and determination.
My teaching philosophy is also grounded in a strong commitment to equity, justice, and reconciliation. Learning about the ongoing impacts of colonization and the importance of uplifting Indigenous voices has reinforced my understanding of the vital role educators play in creating spaces that honour truth, promote understanding, and support healing. I believe that education must be a tool for both personal empowerment and social change.
Flexibility is another cornerstone of my teaching practice. I recognize that learning environments are dynamic and that plans may need to shift in response to studentsâ needs or circumstances. I am adaptable in my scheduling and open to making last-minute changes when necessary to maintain engagement and respond authentically to the classroom context.
During my most recent practicum, I had the opportunity to demonstrate this flexibility and commitment to student choice through a novel study final project. Students were offered nine different options to showcase their learning, including art, drama, creative writing, and other creative formats. This approach empowered students to take ownership of their learning, engage with the novel in personal and meaningful ways, and demonstrate their understanding through their strengths and interests.
At the core of my teaching philosophy is a simple yet profound âwhyâ: the student. I aspire to leave a legacy of care, connection, and opportunity. A legacy that empowers each learner to become the best version of themselves, both within the classroom and beyond.
